Albums that absolutely everybody seem to have

Today I have been listening to Buena Vista Social Club, and it suddenly hit me how incredibly ingenious this album is. I am not a big fan of Latin American music, but I absolutely adore this album, and I have it, one of the few non-rock disks I ever bought . Which led me into another conclusion. I think most of the people I know have, or have at some point had this album. Have you ever noticed that? That there are some albums that everybody seems to have? Even those people who are generally not into the genre. Here I present the list of albums of various genres that I believe most people I know have. I suppose it must be very subjective, but here it is:

1. Buena Vista Social Club
2. Red Hot Chili Peppers "Californication"*
3. Amy Winehouse "Back to Black"
4. Nirvana "Nevermind"
5. Air "Moon Safari"
6. Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon"
7. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds "Murder Ballads"
8. Santana "Supernatural"
9. Metallica "The Black Album"
10. Depeche Mode "Violator"

*Actually, I think "Californication" deserves to be on the first place, since it is obviously the most universal piece of music ever created. Everybody, from my teenage cousin who was only 10 when the album was published, to my then 42-year old mother were addicted to it.

A final remark: What I'm wandering is this: does the popularity of these works really reflect some value, or is it just mass hypnosis and well planned propaganda which led to their massive sale?

EDIT: Here is the official list of 10 best-selling albums worldwide which I found on Wikipedia, the source of all knowledge). I have omitted soundtracks and compilations:

1. Michael Jackson "Thriller" - the absolute champion, 104 000 000 copies sold worldwide, nobody else reaches even 50.
2. AC/DC "Back in Black" - 42 000 000
3. Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" - 40 000 000 (see? :))
4. Backstreet Boys "Millennium" - 40 000 000 (is this some kind of a joke?)
5. Shania Twain "Come on Over" - 39 000 000
6. Meat Loaf "Bat out of Hell" - 34 000 000
7. The Beatles "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band" - 32 000 000
8. Celine Dion "Falling Into You" - 32 000 000
9. Led Zeppelin "Led Zeppelin IV" - 32 000 000 (ooops, I forgot this one :P)
10. Michael Jackson "Bad" - 32 000 000

I have to say this is a bit disappointing... but one can definitely notice a huge U.S. influence. I know very few people from the U.S, and I have no idea what kind of music they like, so I could not take this into account. Also, the aforementioned RHCP album is at the bottom of the list, with "only" 15 million sold copies ww, while the album that led me into making this list, Buena Vista Social Club, is not even on the list, with only 5 million sold copies. I can only conclude that, while it was extremely popular in Serbia, widely played at caffes and on radio, this has obviously not been the case around the world...
